know anything about garage door openers?

I want to get one for DH for our anniversary (I know, so romantic!), but they all look the same to me. Our garage isn't attached to the house so we don't need a super quiet one, just one that works :-) Do you have one to recommend? About how much was it? (if you don't mond me asking...)

Also, did you have it installed? How much might that be? I called Home Depot yesterday but they were useless--no one knew, how is that???

Re: know anything about garage door openers?

  • We're currently shopping for a new garage door and opener, because ours isn't working anymore. I don't have any pricing info yet, but I'll let you know if I get some. Our garage is also detached, but I don't know if that makes a difference.

  • We needed a super-powerful door lifter b/c our garage door is enormous and heavy - I forget now, maybe $250.

Lowe's was offering free installation when we bought it, so we used the Lowe's technician.  We did have to have an electrician come out too, to replace the outdated plug.

  • Can't help you out with pricing or recommendation but just wanted to recommend you do a self-install. I've installed a garage door opener before and it's really not tough. Between the two of you it's an evening job at the most.
  • DH just replaced one in our rental last week.  He got it at Sears and the guy there helped him pick out the correct one.  (I realize, it depends on who is working and when you go, so maybe not so helpful.)  He was able to put it in in a matter of a few hours.

I was thinking about installing it myself--I'm pretty handy--but taking care of Warner all day doesn't leave me much time or energy for that kind of job. And I want to surprise DH with it being all installed, I don't want him to have to do it.
