FL vacation help, please

husband & I want to take a 4-5 day getaway vacation somewhere warm in april. we would love a beach & be able to walk to shops, restaurants, etc. We like strolling the beach, boardwalk/strip, casual dining & fruity drinks outdoors. relaxing & fun. jacuzzi would be great, too! we will not be renting a car. so we want to be near enough to an airport to get a taxi/shuttle to the hotel.

we were thinking key west.... I like the idea of taking a ferry shuttle. do they run in april?? are they easy to get to from the Miami or Ft. Myers airports? again, no car rental.

What about other islands in the Keys via the ferry shuttle? hotel recommendations?

other FL vacation ideas that are warm & within taxi distance from the airport? Any help is REALLY appreciated!!!! we'd like to spend under $1500 total including air, hotel, taxi's.

  • If you're thinking about the Keys, then you might want to ask the South Florida board.

Otherwise, if you're interested in the Tampa Bay area, Clearwater or St. Pete Beach would be a great place for you. There are plenty of shuttles from the airport that would take you there with lots to do around Clearwater Beach.

  • Here's the link for the ferry.

It goes from Ft. Myers to the Keys and back.

IMHO, the Keys aren't really interesting.  There's very little there except bars and people who feel like they really didn't fit in to real life so they gravitated to the accepting cobbled-together culture of the Keys.  Don't worry, be happy.

If I were you, I'd spend the vaca on Lido Beach right next to Sarasota.  You could choose to do casual dining at many nice restaurants, fruity drinks at sidewalk cafes around St. Armand's Circle of shops, beautiful beach area almost next to the Circle.  We stayed at the Holiday Inn at the intersection of the Circle's road and the beach for our anniversary trip last year and it was wonderful to walk on the beach or up to the shoppes, etc.

  • Ditto Kristin- St Armand's sounds exactly like what you are looking for. It is a beautiful area... check into the Sarasota airport too.
  • I was just out at the Lido Beach Resort yesterday.  They are having a special starting April 6th for $134/night, which is an absolute steal in Sarasota.  It's right on the beach, the hotel is gorgeous and tropical.  The pool area with tiki bar is right overlooking the beach.  There is a gorgeous restaurant at the top of the hotel overlooking the water.

I went there to look at it for my parents who are thinking of taking advantage of the special.  The hotel provides free shuttle to St Armands, although it's less than a mile away.  St Armands has shopping, outdoor restaurants, fancy restaurants, ice cream, casual dining, it's great.  I highly recommend it.  Your description sounds exactly like a Lido Key vacation.

The SRQ airport is small and beautiful and only 15 minutes from Lido Key.

I also highly recommend Lido over the Keys.
