Incorporating multiple patterns

HELLO! I'm pretty new to [the nest] and this is my first post! I need some help with my new living room and thought I could start here!

My husband and I just bought our first house a couple months ago! We are very excited and can't wait to truly make it OUR home! We have been adding small things here and there, but our first big purchase was new living room furniture! Crazy the things you get excited about as you get older...

We purchased our living room set from Ashley Furniture. The couch and love seat are charcoal/dark gray in color and our accent chair is kind of a "modern floral" design, if I were to give it a name myself. We have pillows that match the pattern on the accent chair as well as one striped pillow.

I am big into mixing patterns that "go" together, not necessarily match. It's funny that I say I'm "big into" doing so when really, I never have! But it is something I have always wanted to do and love the look of! My problem is, what other patterns would "go" with our new living room furniture? We like more modern things but have no problem incorporating a traditional pattern as well. I would like to replace some of/add to our existing pillows. Right now, everything just seems too "matchy" and neutral for me. We were also thinking of adding some kind of patterned area rug as well since we do have wood floors.

With gray/charcoal being our primary color palette right now, we definitely want to add some pops of color. We got this blue/teal vase as a wedding gift and would like to incorporate that into the room. We used that as our inspiration as our pop of color and thought we could complement that with red as well. So gray, blue/teal, and red... our color palette to work with!

Please help us find complimentary patterns to use with our new furniture! And hopefully find something within our ideal palette, but we are open for anything!

THANK YOU!!!

I have attached pix of our living room set as well as a potential rug! Could I use this pattern?! HELP!!!

Re: Incorporating multiple patterns

  • How about turquoise blue/tiffany blue? Is that too bright?

I like that rug pattern :)

  • I was thinking of using red as an accent color to the teal and grey since we have an open concept floor plan between the kitchen and living room and we have a wine theme in the kitchen... hence the red color. I just wanted it to flow as the one entire space that it is. :)

  • Patterns in some places, such as rugs or mosaics on mirrors are easy to incorporate flawlessly. Just take a look at some of these mirrors: luxury interior accessories
  • Congratulations @MalloryNP13 for your new home! Glad to see you are excited about decorating your dream home. I really like your sofa and cushions floral design. I would suggest you should go with serenity blue or Tiffany blue to compliment this color palette.
